1st January in Cuba is marked of course as the start of a New Year, but it is also the anniversary of the Triumph of the Revolution. At his New Year’s party on 31 January 1958, President Batista announced to his top government officials that he was leaving the country, which he did that very night. The next morning, 1 January 1959, began a new chapter in the history of the island, which nearly 60 years on is still being written.
